ChatGPT SEO: How to Get Your Website Found and Cited in ChatGPT
How ChatGPT search finds its sources, the technical requirement OpenAI names, six steps towards more citations and how to measure visits from ChatGPT.
In short: For many questions, ChatGPT searches the web itself and cites the sources behind its answer. For your website to be one of them, it must be accessible to the OAI-SearchBot crawler, easy to find on Google and Bing, and answer specific questions in a way ChatGPT can quote. OpenAI says no placement is guaranteed. Visits from ChatGPT can be measured, though, because ChatGPT tags its links with utm_source=chatgpt.com.
This article focuses on ChatGPT. For how generative search works in general, see our GEO guide. Last reviewed: October 2026.
How ChatGPT search finds its sources
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT searches the web automatically when a question would benefit from current information. Answers that use web search include clickable citations and a list of further relevant links.
For these searches, ChatGPT sometimes works with other search providers; OpenAI names Microsoft and Shopify. What matters for website owners: ChatGPT rewrites the question into one or more targeted search queries. A general question becomes several specific sub-questions, and ChatGPT looks for matching pages for each of them.
For local questions, ChatGPT uses an approximate location based on the IP address. "Good restaurants near me" becomes a search that includes the city name, for example.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT ranks results using several factors intended to surface relevant, reliable information. Placement is explicitly not guaranteed.
The requirement: allow OAI-SearchBot
In its guidance for publishers, OpenAI states that any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. For content to be included in summaries and snippets, the OAI-SearchBot crawler must not be blocked.
- Check robots.txt: OAI-SearchBot must not be excluded. A rule for GPTBot only affects model training, not search.
- Check hosting and CDN: OpenAI explicitly says your host or content delivery network must allow traffic from its published searchbot IP addresses. Firewalls and bot protection sometimes block this without anything showing in robots.txt.
- Serve content in HTML: important text should be in the HTML the server delivers, not created later by JavaScript.
If you want to keep a page out of ChatGPT entirely, blocking it in robots.txt is not always enough: if OpenAI learns the URL another way, the link and page title may still appear. That is what the noindex meta tag is for, and the crawler has to be allowed to read the page to see it.
Six steps towards more citations in ChatGPT
1. Answer the sub-questions, not just the main topic
Because ChatGPT breaks questions into targeted searches, pages that clearly answer specific sub-questions do better. For a service, that means separate sections on cost, timeline, process, requirements, comparisons with alternatives and suitability for particular audiences. Put the answer in the first one or two sentences of each section.
2. Be easy to find on Google and Bing
ChatGPT partly relies on search partners, and OpenAI names Microsoft among them. Solid search engine optimisation therefore remains the foundation. Alongside Google Search Console, register your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and check that your important pages are indexed there.
3. Write quotable content
Short, unambiguous statements with figures and sources are easier to quote than general sales copy. In the GEO study by Aggarwal and colleagues (KDD 2024), quotations, statistics and cited sources increased visibility in the tested answers by 30 to 41 per cent, while keyword stuffing did not help.
4. Appear in comparisons, directories and reviews
When people ask for providers, such as an agency for a particular topic, ChatGPT needs sources that name and assess providers. Make sure you appear there: industry directories, comparison sites, review platforms and trade articles. Keep your details consistent everywhere.
5. State your service area clearly
Because ChatGPT adds location to local questions, your website should say clearly where you work: the cities, regions or countries your offer covers. This also helps businesses without a shopfront that work remotely.
6. Label interactive elements accessibly
According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT agent in the ChatGPT Atlas browser reads ARIA attributes, the same roles and labels that screen readers use. Clearly labelled buttons, menus and forms therefore help people and AI agents alike.
How to measure visits from ChatGPT
ChatGPT automatically adds the parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its search results. Your web analytics can therefore show how many visits come from ChatGPT and which pages they land on.
- Web analytics: filter by the source chatgpt.com and review the landing pages.
- Manual tests: ask your customers' most important questions in ChatGPT on a regular schedule and record the date, question, answer and cited sources. Answers vary, so repetition matters.
- Enquiries: what counts is whether those visits turn into qualified enquiries. Track that separately.
To turn this into a regular measurement routine, see our guide How to measure AI visibility.
Common mistakes
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot instead of GPTBot: trying to opt out of training and accidentally blocking search.
- Bot protection in the CDN: robots.txt allows everything, but the firewall still turns OpenAI away.
- Sales copy only: the page says how good an offer is but answers no specific question.
- No measurement: without tracking chatgpt.com as a source, you cannot tell whether the work pays off.
And "SEO with ChatGPT"?
ChatGPT SEO sometimes also means using ChatGPT as a tool for your own search engine optimisation, for example for outlines, question ideas or draft page titles. That saves time but does not replace review: facts, prices and claims must be correct. According to its spam policies, Google treats using generative AI to produce many pages without value for users as spam.

Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT SEO
ChatGPT SEO prepares a website so that ChatGPT search can find it, understand it and cite it as a source. It is part of generative engine optimisation (GEO) and builds on traditional search engine optimisation.
According to OpenAI, any public website can appear in ChatGPT search as long as OAI-SearchBot is not blocked. Beyond that, good visibility on Google and Bing, clear answers to specific questions and mentions on other websites help. A mention cannot be guaranteed.
For web search, ChatGPT sometimes works with other search providers; OpenAI names Microsoft and Shopify. ChatGPT rewrites the question into targeted search queries and evaluates the results itself.
OAI-SearchBot crawls pages for search in ChatGPT; GPTBot collects content for model training. They can be controlled separately. To stay visible in ChatGPT search, do not block OAI-SearchBot.
ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its search results. You can filter by it in your web analytics and see which pages those visitors land on.
OpenAI picks up changes to robots.txt after about 24 hours. Whether and when your content is cited depends on the question, the competition and the quality of your content, and cannot be predicted.
